HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON 1908-2004 - Lot 190
HENRI CARTIER-BRESSON 1908-2004 "Scrapbook - Photographs 1932-1946", Steidl, 2006, 264 pages. Bound in imitation leather, titled in gilt lettering. First edition. Introduction by Martine Franck. Henri Cartier-Bresson was taken prisoner by the Germans in 1940; after two unsuccessful attempts, he managed to escape in February 1943. Meanwhile, New York's MoMA, thinking the photographer had disappeared, began preparing a "posthumous" exhibition of his work. When he reappeared, he was delighted to learn that this exhibition would take place, even though he was still alive. Henri Cartier-Bresson decided to review all his work and select everything that "fit" himself. He selected and printed over 300 images, many of them unpublished at the time, and set off for New York in April 1946, with the prints in his suitcase. On arrival, he bought a large album - a "scrap book" - in which he pasted all the images before showing them at MoMA. The exhibition opened on February 4, 1947, just before Magnum was founded. In-4 (31 x 27 cm) Very good condition.
