Fontcuberta Joan Trepat. A case study in Avant-Garde Photogr - Lot 81
Fontcuberta Joan Trepat. A case study in Avant-Garde Photography. Editions Bessard, 2014. Hardcover with slipcase, mint condition. Numbered copy /350 signed by Joan Fontcuberta with a metal piece of the Trepat factory on the front cover frontispiece. "In 1914, industrial magnate Josep Trepat Galceran created an industry for the production of agricultural machinery that was to become one of Spain's economic engines during the 20th century. A cultured man with a keen eye for the artistic dynamics of his time, Mr. Trepat commissioned some of the great masters of international photography for his company's advertising and corporate image. He was a connoisseur and enthusiast of the work of Man Ray, Albert Renger-Patzsch, László Moholy Nagy, Alexander Rodchenko, Charles Sheeler, Walker Evans and so many other photographers of the historical avant-garde, who found in industrial forms an inspiring universe for aesthetic renewal. A century after its foundation, the Trepat Collection stands out as a little-known treasure trove of photographic history. Among the wealth of this collection, the MACSA (Catalan Museum of Agricultural Systems Archaeology), in partnership with the Trepat Historical Archive in Tàrrega (Lleida), has decided to present an exhibition to highlight and commemorate the centenary of the birth of the Trepat factories. The exhibition has been curated by Joan Fontcuberta, not only a creator himself, but also a historian and author of several works on the history of Spanish photography. For the occasion, a book will be published by Éditions Bessard, Paris; in his introductory essay, the curator writes: "Looking at these works from a historical perspective and beyond their originally utilitarian purpose, the images gathered here masterfully visualize the entire experimental journey of the avant-gardes: from Cubism to New Objectivity, from Preciosism to Surrealism, from Constructivism to Social Realism..."".
