Mroué Rabih Diary of a Leap Year. Born in Beirut in 1967, Ra - Lot 146
Mroué Rabih Diary of a Leap Year. Born in Beirut in 1967, Rabih Mroué is a Lebanese actor, director and visual artist. Strongly inspired by theater and the stage, his work as a visual artist incorporates video and multidisciplinary installation. His performances, though written, are designed to appear improvised and unfinished, Mroué preferring reflection in movement to fixed representation. His eminently political work brings to the fore issues that have gone unmentioned in today's Lebanon. Published by the Lebanese publisher Kaph Books to coincide with his exhibition at Kunsthalle Mainz, this "diary of a leap year" reproduces a series of 366 collages based on political newspapers published in Lebanon and the wider Arab world. Through this abstract treatment of the image, the Lebanese artist attempts to redefine the predominant media narrative around the Middle East, steeped in a constant representation of violence. The book is both poor and delicate, and its transparent pages allow the collages to resonate with each other. The result is an unusual, carefully crafted object, far removed from the spectrum of the traditional photography book.
