Years 1939 and 1940 unbound. Missing the last 4 issues of 1940. Exceptional set. "The first issue of "VU" was published on March 21, 1928: "VU will bring universal life to the eye". From its inception, "VU" was established by Lucien Vogel as the first truly photographic news magazine. It was to serve as a model for successors such as "Life" and then "Paris Match". Lucien Vogel surrounded himself with a team of young, avant-garde writers. Carlo Rim was editor-in-chief, Alexander Liberman layout designer, André Kertész, Germaine Krull, Éli Lotar and Man Ray freelance photographers. The "VU" magazine is printed on rotogravure presses, enabling new types of layout. In fact, "rotogravure" makes it possible to blend photographs and text in a more fluid and dynamic way, at the whim of the art director. The complementarity of text and image takes on its full meaning, and photography is no longer there simply to illustrate. Photoreportage was invented in "VU": photographers were entrusted with the coverage of certain subjects to meet editorial needs. The text would complement or inflect the point of view developed by the photographers. New page layout facilities ensure a more modern reading experience. The magazine's logo was designed by Cassandre." Sylvain Besson "VU, un magazine photographique", Musée Nicéphore Niépce, 2018. Bibliography: Michel Frizot, Cédric de Veigy "Vu. Le magazine photographique 1928-1940", éd. de La Martinières, Paris, 2009.
