Alexandre DEFAUX (1826-1900) - Lot 15
Alexandre DEFAUX (1826-1900)
Rue de l'Épicerie in Rouen, 1885.
Oil on panel signed lower left and countersigned, captioned and dated 1885 on the back. Gilded frame.
55 x 32 cm
Known for his oil paintings, Defaux was a pupil of Corot. His early landscapes reflect his master's influence, with large panoramic urban views.
Working on a wide range of motifs, he later adopted stronger color combinations and painting techniques suggesting the influences of Rousseau or Diaz de la Pena. He exhibited regularly at the Salon until 1897, when he was praised by critics for his skill with brush and knife.
The 1870s and 1880s were Defaux's most successful period, with good reviews in the 1880s. Awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1881, his work is particularly appreciated for its ability to combine strong pictorial techniques with pleasing subjects. He was awarded a gold medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition.
This work, painted in 1885, is typical of this prosperous period. As is often the case, he places himself slightly above the subject, and is rarely on a level with what he is painting. The themes he tackles are almost always testimonies to everyday life and habitats (streets, churches). Such is the case with the grocer's street, an unavoidable motif for 19th-century artists, later widely taken up by Impressionist painters and then by the painters of the Rouen School.
