Henri VIGNET (1857-1920) - Lot 17
Henri VIGNET (1857-1920) Rue Zaccharie, Paris, 1902. Oil on panel signed lower right, monogrammed lower left, titled, monogrammed by the artist and label annotated "(725)/ La rue Zacharie Paris/1902/Coll Rouen" on the back. Gilt frame. 45.8 x 26.5 cm Vignet was one of the founders of the Rouen School. A pupil of Zacharie and Lebel, he exhibited at the Rouen Salon as early as 1884. He won a bronze medal at the 1891 Salon. Settling in rue Saint-Romain, in the former workshops of ironmonger Marrou, he soon enjoyed success with his views of old Rouen. When he moved to Paris in 1899, he painted similar views, often animated, but always in a romantic style. He lived at 12 rue Cornet, where his neighbor was Léon Bloy, with whom he frequently quarreled. He later moved to the Île Saint-Louis, and his oils were reproduced in a series of black-and-white postcards. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1902. His mastery of light was the key to his success. In 1903, a critic at the Paris Salon noted the qualities of a "modern painter who captures the most elusive nuances". This view is typical of his work. Vignet uses the shadow on the left to give relief to his composition. Rue Zacharie, a model for artists for its picturesque character, lends itself particularly well to his work. The photographer Charles Marville had already captured it in the mid-1860s.
