ÉMILE CAGNIART (1851-1911) - Lot 47
ÉMILE CAGNIART (1851-1911) Farm in Normandy. Pastel signed lower left. Framed. 15 x 24 cm A student of Antoine Guillemet, Émile Cagniart (1851-1911) made his debut at the Salon in 1877. A plein-air painter, he produced mainly pastels throughout his career, particularly in Normandy, where he painted luminous landscapes. The treatment of sunlight was his specialty, in his large-format paintings of Parisian boulevards at sunset and park views. In this pastel, Cagniart depicts a farm bathed in light. Hens and a peacock can be seen in the foreground. A golden light illuminates the left gable of the building and the straw, while silhouettes move away towards the vanishing point.
