Marcel CRAMOYSAN (1915-2007) - The port of Dieppe.
Oil on canvas signed lower left.
46 x 65 cm
A pupil of Pinchon, Cramoysan mainly painted Normandy landscapes. He first exhibited in Rouen in the 1940s, before showing his work in Paris, where his oils rubbed shoulders with those of Vlaminck, Foujita and Utrillo at the Galerie Pétridès.
In his most successful seascapes, a deep tone, oscillating from blue to green, exudes a muted intensity. Such is the case with this port of Dieppe. The painting is classically composed in a 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 ratio. In the foreground, two sailboats and a rowboat are moored, while the central part of the painting features a ship, probably a battleship, and the cliff. The upper third of the painting depicts the sky, in a vaporous chromatic range that gradates with the tones of the basin.
