His fascination with the artistic rendering of light provided the subject for many astonishing nocturnal works. His fascination with the artistic rendering of light provided the subject matter for many of his astonishing nocturnal works, in keeping with his recurrent interest in Symbolism, to which he devoted part of his career. All his works reflect his interest in landscapes and rural scenes, placing him in the great tradition of his realist and naturalist contemporaries such as Millet and Lepage. Women also play a central role in his work.
