Narcisse GUILBERT (1878-1942) - Lot 100
Narcisse GUILBERT (1878-1942) Old Mill in Duclair, 1939. Oil on reinforced panel signed lower left and countersigned, located and dated by Guilbert on the back. Gilt frame. 36.5 x 44.5 cm A major painter of the Rouen School, Guilbert followed the advice of Joseph Delattre, then the classes of Philippe Zacharie. He exhibited at the Salon de Rouen from 1907 to 1936 and regularly at the Galerie Legrip. Here, Guilbert delivers a panel depicting a mill in Duclair in 1939. As usual, he uses clear, sonorous harmonies and powerful colors, in particular the intense blue of the water balanced by the pink of the flowers and the golden color of the millstone. His expressive brushstrokes are characteristic of his work of the 1930s, when he favored tight framing and intimate subjects.
