Vases, bronzes, marbles and other antiques After an initial - Lot 143
Vases, bronzes, marbles and other antiques After an initial distribution by the State in 1863 of antique works from the Campana collection, the Louvre decided in the 1870s to send a large number of paintings, sculptures, ceramics from the modern period and archaeological objects to "the museums of the French provinces". In 1875, the "Département des Antiques et de la Sculpture moderne" distributed one thousand seven hundred and seventy-seven of the pieces featured in this publication. This collection, made up mainly of antique objects (terracotta vases for the most part), also includes some modern works: remarkable medallions seized during the Revolution from the Château de Gaillon, former residence of the archbishops of Rouen. The first part of the book deals with the role of the State and France's archaeological and museum policy in the 19th century. The historical study is followed by a catalog raisonné of the antique and modern objects distributed in 1575. In addition, a documentary apparatus provides a better understanding of this largely unpublished material. Gourcuff Gradenigo 2007
