Monticelli written by Van Gogh The aesthetic and graphic cor - Lot 152
Monticelli written by Van Gogh The aesthetic and graphic correspondences between Adolphe Monticelli and Vincent van Gogh are as complex as they are obvious. In his sublime correspondence, Vincent often evoked his interest in the painting of Monticelli from Marseilles. Long forgotten as one of the most important painters of the 19th century, Monticelli has returned to international prominence over the last decade, thanks in particular to the exceptional work of expert art dealer Marc Stammegna. It became urgent and pertinent to open the debate on Monticelli's contribution to Van Gogh and on the historical reality of the work of an artist who was both mysterious and celebrated. In her book, Nadine Stammegna, his wife, offers a fascinating reflection on the subject, including, for the very first time, the didactic support of letters in which Van Gogh talks about Monticelli. An event made possible by his collaboration with the prestigious Van Gogh Foundation in Amsterdam. In addition to superb color reproductions, this beautiful art book includes all the handwritten letters in which Van Gogh explains his fascination with Monticelli and the South Ferry 2003.
