A BOOK OF PHOTO RIDDLES - Lot 164
A BOOK OF PHOTO RIDDLES
"A peeping Tom's Archive"; United Pirates, 2005; 48 pages.
Paperback; original edition, "with a French-english peeping Tom Glossary"; an underground publication issued under the "United Pirates" label. As intriguing as it is effective, this little book of photographs brings together shots taken by an anonymous French doctor of bathers in Cannes in the mid-1950s - some of the faces perhaps evoking film figures.
"These photos were taken during a rare period of incredible tolerance, no doubt as a kind of anticlimax after the horrors of a world conflict. The photographer was a French doctor practicing near the beach in Cannes in the mid-1950s. For the reader's pleasure, daytime scenes alternate with furtive nocturnal encounters. We have deliberately chosen not to indicate which characters meet more than once. Any resemblance to famous actors present at the Festival would be purely coincidental." - Tom Bruce, excerpt from the preface.
The book's colophon reads "Not for sale, Not for giving, Not for keeping, Please destroy after reading".
The book's frontispiece reads "Beware! In the United Kingdom, non-consensual voyeurism became a criminal offence.... the simple possession of this book might be illegal in several countries.... please make sure before travelling .... and don't hesitate to destroy it discretely!
In-16 (14,5 x 13 cm).
