François Bret: Grape Harvest at La Pardiguiere, 1963 (Waterc - Lot 29
François Bret: Grape Harvest at La Pardiguiere, 1963 (Watercolor on paper) Watercolor on paper Signed and inscribed by hand: “For Y.G., with warm regards” Dimensions: Sheet: 36 × 27 cm (14.17 × 10.63 in.) Condition: good condition, unframed Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (single-owner provenance; the dedications place the collector in the casino circles of the Riviera and Dinard). Description: A grape harvest scene hand-painted in the collector’s guestbook and warmly inscribed. François Bret was a French painter and a major figure in the cultural life of the postwar French Riviera—a professor at the School of Decorative Arts in Nice (1950), director of the School of Fine Arts in Marseille (1961), and a producer for Télé Monte-Carlo, where he hosted Picasso, Chagall, and Cocteau. His work evolved from an early linear style, reminiscent of Marquet, to a color-dominated, almost Orphic style in the early 1960s—the period in which this sheet was created.
