Description: A harlequin playing the mandolin—a recurring Commedia dell’Arte motif in the artist’s work—painted in watercolor in the collector’s guestbook. Born in Nice in 1910, Jean Cassarini trained at the city’s School of Decorative Arts, worked as a newspaper illustrator and theater set designer, and was one of the founders of UMAM (Mediterranean Union for Modern Art), the Riviera’s first modernist association—which placed him at the heart of Yves Guérin’s circle in Nice. Hand-signed to the collector.
