Roger Chapelain-Midy: Head Crowned with Foliage, 1968 (Watercolor)

Sheet: 36 × 27 cm (14.17 × 10.63 in.) — Image: the upper two-thirds of the sheet
Condition: good condition, unframed
Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (from a single source). The dedication commemorates the artist’s exhibition “at the Palais”—in this context, the Palais de la Méditerranée in Nice, which was directed by the collector: a direct documentary link to this venue.
Description: A poetic watercolor—the head and shoulders of a youthful, pensive figure, crowned with a garland of leaves and laurel and adorned with ivy, rendered in fluid washes of green and pale ochre: an Arcadian and dreamlike image, characteristic of the artist’s poetic style. Roger Chapelain-Midy was a great French painter, lithographer, illustrator, and theater set designer, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he later taught (studio director, 1955–74); a champion of the classical French tradition of Poussin and the Renaissance, infused with mystery and wonder, he received the Carnegie Prize (1938) and designed sets and costumes for the Paris Opera and the Comédie-Française. His work is featured at the Centre Pompidou. Signed, dated, and inscribed by hand.
