A characteristic late lithograph by Max Ernst, *Scarab* condenses the artist’s fascination with the natural world and its hidden mythologies into a single insect. The scarab—an emblem of metamorphosis and solar rebirth since antiquity—belongs to the surrealist bestiary that Ernst had been exploring since the frottages of *Natural History* (1926). Printed three years before his death.
