Condition: (a) very fine condition, beautiful inking; (b) very fine print, well-inked, small stain in the upper left margin; both unframed Two prints executed in the artist’s characteristic dense and energetic linework. In (a), a seated female nude, shown from the front against the ogival back of an armchair, with a clothed man emerging from the shadows—a recurring theme in Goerg’s work: the contrast between the exposed nude and the male gaze, with velvety blacks setting off the luminous body. In (b), young nude figures—nymphs—are fleeing and tumbling through a clearing, while beyond them does deer graze among slender tree trunks: a fantastical and poetic forest that recalls the artist’s claimed kinship with Bosch and Goya; here a rare print from the first state (3/4), prior to the final edition. Goerg, a major figure in French Expressionism and one of the great etchers of his generation, taught etching at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and served as president of the Société des Peintres-Graveurs français.
