Bookplate created for Fernand J. Heitz, appointed judge at the Court of Appeals of Algiers in 1940. Divided into three sections within a bold black frame: at the top, an Alsatian village with a stork flying overhead, and Strasbourg Cathedral in the distance; in the center, an Algerian scene (minaret, palm tree) where two young Alsatians in traditional costumes with cockades—refugees with their luggage and gas masks, the boy’s suitcase labeled “30 kg” and marked with a swastika—have stopped, while the girl points to a stork in flight and exclaims, “I recognize it—it’s the stork from my village! "; at the bottom, a background strewn with lilies bearing a banner with the owner’s name, surrounded by the coats of arms of Lower Alsace, Saverne, Strasbourg, Colmar, and Upper Alsace. A poignant and gently satirical depiction of Alsatian exile under the Occupation, by Hansi, the great Colmar-based illustrator and staunch anti-German patriot; the year 1940 recalls Heitz’s appointment, while the illustration itself is signed and dated 1942.
