Camille Hilaire: The Mediterranean, c. 1968 (Watercolor, wit - Lot 122
Camille Hilaire: The Mediterranean, c. 1968 (Watercolor, with gouache highlights) Watercolor, with gouache highlights Signed and inscribed by hand, lower left: “The Mediterranean / For Yves Guérin / With warm regards,” signed “Hilaire” Dimensions: Paper: 36 × 27 cm (14.17 × 10.63 in.) — Image: nearly full sheet Condition: good condition, unframed Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (provenance from a single source). Hilaire was a direct member of the collector’s circle in Nice: in 1961, he participated in “Ten Painters Around Jacques Villon”—organized by François Bret (entry No. 1 in this guestbook)—at the Palais de la Méditerranée in Nice. Description: A vibrant, multifaceted Mediterranean composition—sea, coastline, and abstract forms evoking ship rigging—built upon intense blues, fresh greens, and luminous yellows, in Hilaire’s characteristic post-Cubist style, structured according to the golden ratio. A painter, lithographer, tapestry artist, and stained-glass artist born in Metz, Hilaire trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Nicolas Untersteller and Maurice Brianchon, and taught in Nancy and later at the ENSBA in Paris. A masterful and characteristic watercolor, signed and inscribed by hand to the collector.
