Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (from a single collection).
Description: A lyrical seascape—a large sun streaked with oil pastels (oranges, yellows, reds, pinks, and purples) rising above a sea rendered in blue and mauve watercolor accented with dotted strokes, and seagulls in flight sketched with a fine pencil, with light pencil circles structuring the composition like a sun and its halo. Jean-Théobald Jacus was a French figurative painter and draftsman, trained at the Beaux-Arts in Reims and Paris and under the Dutch master Conrad Kickert; a gold medalist at the Salon des Artistes Français (1977, the year this sheet was created), he was appointed Official Painter of the Air and Space in 1987 and illustrated Boris Vian’s *L’Écume des jours*. His art, “ranging from abstraction to reality,” is imbued with a dreamlike, sometimes fantastical spirit—exactly the atmosphere here. Signed, dated, and inscribed by hand.
