Jean Cluseau-Lanauve: The Terrace at Falicon, July 30, 1975 - Lot 134
Jean Cluseau-Lanauve: The Terrace at Falicon, July 30, 1975 (Oil pastel) Oil pastel (crayolor) Dedicated, signed, and dated by hand at the bottom margin: “To Yves and Thérèse, a memento of Falicon, with warm regards, 7/30/75,” signed lower right “Cluseau Lanauve” Dimensions: Paper: 36 × 27 cm (14.17 × 10.63 in.) — Image: full sheet Condition: good condition, unframed Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (from a single collection). A memento of Falicon, the hilltop village overlooking Nice—a new connection to the collector’s Côte d’Azur circle. Description: A luminous terrace scene in oil pastels, set in Falicon, above Nice—figures seated at a table beneath an awning striped with orange, red, and mauve, a deck chair, flowering plants, and a blurred hill in the distance, all rendered in the artist’s pointillist and post-Cubist style, using vibrant, fragmented colors. Jean Cluseau-Lanauve was a significant painter, engraver, and lithographer of the École de Paris, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in André Devambez’s studio; a post-Cubist colorist in the tradition of Jacques Villon, he painted lively scenes, celebrations, terraces, landscapes, and seascapes, and was appointed official painter to the Navy in 1989. He never went anywhere without a sketchbook and paints to prepare his canvases, and luminous terrace scenes recur throughout his body of work. Signed, dated, and hand-inscribed “To Yves and Thérèse.”
