Dimensions:
Sheet: 36 × 27 cm (14.17 × 10.63 in.) — Image: nearly full sheet
Condition: good condition, unframed
Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (provenance from a single source). Notable connection: Lelong was the subject of a retrospective at the Palais de la Méditerranée in Nice in 1974—the institution headed by the collector.
Description: A fresh and luminous beach scene—a young woman in a red swimsuit, flippers in hand, walking along a pebble beach toward a turquoise sea, a blue rowboat pulled ashore on the left, and seagulls circling in a soft gray-blue sky. It brings together Lelong’s favorite motifs—the bather, the beach, seagulls taking flight (“L’envol”), and the rowboat. Pierre Lelong was a French figurative painter, engraver, and lithographer, a member of the Salon Comparaisons committee, who focused his art on the beauty of women and lively seascapes; a passionate advocate of figurative art (“Pourquoi je suis figuratif,” 1971), he received the Grand Prix des Peintres Témoins de Leur Temps in 1973, and his work is featured in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Châlons-en-Champagne. Signed, dated, and inscribed by hand.
