Andrée Levillain: Flowers on a Table with a Chair, c. 1968 ( - Lot 147
Andrée Levillain: Flowers on a Table with a Chair, c. 1968 (Colored pencils) Colored pencils Hand-signed and inscribed in the lower right corner: “For Yves Guérin,” signed “Levillain” Dimensions: Sheet: 36 × 27 cm (14.17 × 10.63 in.) — Image: nearly full sheet Condition: good condition, unframed Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (single-owner provenance). Most likely by Andrée Levillain, painter and wife of François Bret (No. 1 in this guestbook), forming a paired couple within the album—like Roger Forissier (No. 9) and Nathalie Chabrier (No. 3). Description: An interior still life—flowers in a vase on a table, an upholstered chair on the right, and, behind it, a window opening onto a harbor with boats—drawn with colored pencils in a free and lyrical style, using overlapping vertical hatching in blues, greens, yellows, and pinks. If this is indeed Andrée Levillain, she trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (in the studios of Devambez, Charles Guérin, and Untersteller), where she met François Bret, whom she married in 1939. The sensitive and confident style is that of a painter trained at the École des Beaux-Arts.
