Jean Navarre: Boats, 1986 (Watercolor) - Lot 181
Jean Navarre: Boats, 1986 (Watercolor) Watercolor Hand-signed and dated in the lower left corner: “For Yves Guérin, with warm regards, 8/31/86”; signed lower right “Jean Navarre” Dimensions: Paper: 36 × 27 cm (14.17 × 10.63 in.) — Image: nearly full sheet Condition: good condition, unframed Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (single-owner provenance). Dates from the period when the collector was at the Casino de Dinard. Description: A luminous harbor—fishing boats at anchor, slanted masts, and sails in warm tones, beneath a bright, radiant sun whose rays spread across a pale sky, with reflections and, in the distance, other boats and a tower—in warm yellows, warm oranges and reds accented with green. Jean Navarre was a French painter, lithographer, and illustrator, trained at the École Duperré and the ENSBA in Lucien Simon’s studio, where his classmates included Lucien Fontanarosa (also featured in this album) and Robert Humblot; a winner of the Puvis-de-Chavannes Prize (1973), he was appointed Official Painter of the Air and Space in 1986—the very year this sheet was created—and exhibited alongside Buffet, Aïzpiri, and Camille Hilaire. His art seeks an atmospheric light that seems to emanate from within the painting. Signed, dated, and inscribed by hand.
