Pablo Picasso: Picasso Lithographer IV (Two Heads), 1963 Original black lithograph on vellum—a pair of two sheets Unsigned; dated in the stone “4.2.63” in the lower right corner of each sheet. As published, unsigned print from the volume. Dimensions — Sheet: 32 × 25.5 cm (12 5/8 × 10 in.) each; Condition: Fine condition; unframed References: Mourlot 388 · Bloch 1108 · Cramer 125 (cover of *Picasso Lithographe IV*) Period: Designed on February 4, 1963; published in 1964 The two sheets form the front and back covers of the illustrated cover that Picasso created for the fourth and final volume of the catalog raisonné of his lithographs compiled by Fernand Mourlot (covering prints from 1956 to 1963), published by André Sauret, Éditions du Livre, Monte Carlo, 1964. Executed in a single session on February 4, 1963, the two headpieces illustrate Picasso’s late graphic style: a dense, almost feverish network of lithographic pencil lines from which a few white areas emerge—diamond-shaped eyes, a Y-shaped nose, a crescent-shaped smile—that together form a smiling mask. Printed by Mourlot Frères, Paris.
