Robert Watbot: Roma (Rome), 1989 (Watercolor and black ink) - Lot 239
Robert Watbot: Roma (Rome), 1989 (Watercolor and black ink) Watercolor and black ink (felt-tip pen) Hand-signed in the upper left corner: “To Yves Guérin”; inscribed “Roma”; signed and dated in the lower margin Dimensions: Sheet: 36 × 27 cm (14.17 × 10.63 in.) — Image: nearly full sheet Condition: good condition, unframed Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (provenance from a single source). Dated from the collector’s Casino de Dinard period; Watbot was the subject of a posthumous tribute at the Musée du Château de Dinan, located nearby in Brittany. Description: A vigorous and expressive view of Rome—domes and bell towers standing out against a blue sky, drawn with black felt-tip pen and brush over warm washes of brown, ochre, and blue, the whole powerfully synthesized in a few sweeping strokes. Robert Watbot was a French painter born in Paris in 1942, trained at St. Martin’s School of Art in London, who traveled to Brazil before returning to France; a painter of landscapes, still lifes, and figures, he was the subject of a posthumous tribute at the Musée du Château de Dinan in 1999. Signed, dated, and inscribed by hand.
