Ossip Zadkine: Figure with a Lyre, 1966 (Black felt-tip pen) - Lot 247
Ossip Zadkine: Figure with a Lyre, 1966 (Black felt-tip pen) Black felt-tip pen Hand-signed and inscribed Dimensions: Sheet: 36 × 27 cm (14.17 × 10.63 in.) Condition: good condition, unframed Note: Zadkine did not always sign his works, so the signature here is a plus; given the nature of the market, authentication by a recognized Zadkine expert or committee is recommended prior to any sale and would enhance the value. Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (single-owner provenance; the dedications place the collector in the world of the Riviera and Dinard casinos). Description: A figure holding a lyre—evoking Orpheus, one of the recurring mythological themes in Zadkine’s sculpture and works on paper. A sculptor of Russian origin and a leading figure of the School of Paris and Cubism, Zadkine is famous for “The Destroyed City” in Rotterdam and won the Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1950; his studio on Rue d’Assas in Paris is now the Zadkine Museum. Drawn and signed by hand in late 1966, about a year before the artist’s death.
