Description: A sensitive charcoal portrait—the head and shoulders of a young woman, her dark, parted hair framing a pale, delicately modeled oval face with dark eyes, set against a dark, vertically hatched background, with a small touch of blue at the collar. The composition and quiet solemnity evoke a style of Italian Renaissance portraiture. Jonathan Zutter was a French painter born in Monaco, trained at the Geneva School of Fine Arts, the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, and the Royal Academy in The Hague; settling in Marseille in 1950, he painted portraits—primarily of young women—as well as landscapes, seascapes, and nudes, and is listed in the Bénézit. Hand-signed.
