GEORGES ROUAULT - Lot 73
GEORGES ROUAULT "Miserere"; *L'étoile filante*, published by Editions du Seuil, 1963. Hardcover with illustrated dust jacket and publisher’s slipcase; edition of 450 copies; preface by the artist; introduction by Abbé Morel; 58 plates. Most of these works date from 1914–1918. They were originally executed as Indian ink drawings, later transformed into paintings at the request of Ambroise Vollard. He first had all the works transferred onto copper plates. Apparently, it was necessary for the copper plate to first receive an impression of my drawing. Starting from there, I—and with what difficulty!—attempted to preserve the rhythm and the initial drawing. On each plate, with varying degrees of success, ceaselessly and without pause, I worked with different tools: there is no secret to it. Unsatisfied, I would return to the subject endlessly, producing as many as twelve or fifteen successive states; I would have liked them all to be of the same quality. In-4 (28 x 21 cm)
