JEFF KOONS - Lot 88
JEFF KOONS
"Jeff Koons"; Beyeler Foundation, 2012; 212 pages.
Book; illustrated hardcover; exhibition catalog; text in English. American visual artist Jeff Koons, who began his career in finance, is exhibiting his works for the first time in Switzerland, at the Beyeler Foundation in Riehen.
The exhibition features Koons’s favorite subjects: Michael Jackson and his monkey, the giant balloon dog, and the pink panther nestled in the arms of a nude blonde.
“I did what the Beatles would have done if they had made sculptures,” Jeff Koons said in 1990, as quoted in the exhibition catalog.
The Beyeler Foundation is exhibiting some 50 works from three series, tracing the artistic journey of Koons, who is 56 years old.
The “The New” series was created between 1980 and 1987, “Banality” dates from 1988, and “Celebration” began in 1994.
The works from the 1980s are reminiscent of Marcel Duchamp’s “readymades”—everyday objects, such as vacuum cleaners.
In the “Banality” series, the artist takes familiar motifs from art history and transforms them in his own way.
The famous life-size statue of Michael Jackson and his monkey is part of this series.
“Celebration” is a synthesis of the minimalism of “The New” and the baroque opulence of “Banality,” according to the Beyeler Foundation.
Jeff Koons, who sometimes features himself in his works, was married to the Italian porn actress La Cicciolina, who later entered politics.
