PIET MONDRIAN - Lot 90
PIET MONDRIAN "Piet Mondrian"; Éditions Cercle d'art; 1970; 168 pages. Hardcover with illustrated dust jacket; first edition; text by L.C. Jaffé; 137 illustrations, including 48 full-page color plates. Mondrian began his career as a talented, academic painter, but very quickly people began to discover “something else” in his paintings—something more subtle and profound. His landscapes reveal new horizons of the Dutch countryside with delicate harmonies of color, linear drawings, and original lighting effects that literally bring out the essence of things. His paintings of trees, dune sand, church roofs, and windmills gradually became more refined, culminating in a final phase that transformed contours and flat surfaces into primary colors and horizontal and vertical black lines. Beginning in 1917, in the magazine *De Stijl*, which he founded with other Dutch painters, he was able to express his aesthetic ideas in a significant number of essays. These essays are considered one of the theoretical foundations of abstract art.
