KORINGA - FAKIR WOMAN The Koringa fakir woman and her troupe - Lot 341
KORINGA - FAKIR WOMAN The Koringa fakir woman and her troupe, circus, ca. 1945. Photograph. Vintage silver print, stamped by photographer Ditlev Jensen on the back. 16.3 x 21.5 cm A circus performer and snake charmer, Renée Bernard was nicknamed “the world’s only female fakir.” Her acts involved dancing on blades and training snakes and crocodiles. To satisfy the audience’s craving for the exotic, she created and embodied the character of Koringa, born in India, an orphan raised by fakirs and magicians of Bikaner, from whom she supposedly learned supernatural and hypnotic powers. She joined the Resistance during World War II and then resumed her acts after the Liberation.
