Poster for Steinlen’s first solo exhibition at La Bodinière, 18 rue Saint-Lazare, from April 10 to May 15, 1894, where his drawings and paintings were brought together for the first time. He promotes the exhibition with the motif that made his reputation—the cat. The black cat stands out in solid color against an orange background created with a spatter technique; the calico cat, rendered with brush and scraper, curls up in the foreground. The handwritten lettering, alternating between orange and olive green, serves as a composition in its own right. Steinlen had made the Parisian cat a subject in its own right, from Rodolphe Salis’s *Le Chat Noir* to the illustrations for *Gil Blas* and *Le Mirliton*. Bibliography: Bargiel & Zagrodzky 14; Crauzat no. 492 (p. 134). Examples are held at the Musée Carnavalet in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
