Jordi Bonas: Portrait of Moretti, n.d. (signed) - Lot 27
Jordi Bonas: Portrait of Moretti, n.d. (signed) Original black lithograph on Arches vellum with proofs Numbered 66/75 in pencil lower left, titled in pencil lower center, signed in pencil lower right Dimensions: Sheet 72 × 54 cm (28.3 × 21.3 in.) Condition: Good. A crisp, high-contrast print; the paper is fresh and bright, with the untrimmed edges (control marks) preserved. A few small, scattered foxing spots in the margins (upper-left corner and lower-left edge); the subject is unaffected. Slight waviness in the paper. Unframed. Private collection, France A frontal portrait of a bearded man emerges from a whirlwind of continuous, curving lines; his hair and beard dissolve into pure movement, while his two eyes hold the center of the sheet with striking intensity; on the right, a block of dense hatching in lithographic pencil anchors the composition and projects the head forward. The model is the painter Moretti, in all likelihood Lucien-Philippe Moretti (1922–2000), the Montmartre painter who, like Bonas, belonged to the same Montmartre circle on Rue du Mont-Cenis. Born in Barcelona in 1937, Bonas trained at the city’s School of Fine Arts and worked with Pedro Pruna from 1954 to 1959 before settling in Montmartre; he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, restored paintings for the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris as well as the frescoes in the Church of Saint-Jean de Montmartre in 1964, signed a contract with the Adamo Gallery in New York from 1964 to 1967, and then retired to the Loire Valley, where he received the Gemmail International Prize in Tours in 1992.
