André Dunoyer de Segonzac: The Harbor, circa 1960 (signed) Original color lithograph on vellum Signed “A. Dunoyer de Segonzac” within the composition at the lower right; numbered 142/225 in pencil at the lower left and signed “A. Dunoyer de Segonzac” in pencil at the lower right in the margin Dimensions: Sheet 52 × 76 cm (20.5 × 29.9 in.); Image 37 × 64 cm (14.6 × 25.2 in.) Condition: Good condition, minor flaws limited to the margins: a few scattered foxing spots and handling creases in the upper right margin; the subject is unaffected. Unframed. Private collection, France Two heavy fishing boats—the one closest bearing the name THÉIA, the next one AUGUSTIN—are hauled ashore on a light-colored slipway in the foreground, their rigging piled across the benches, while a line of masted boats stretches away along the wharf to the right. Across the calm water rise the tiled roofs and sheds of a bustling harbor front, dominated by the black scaffolding of a shipyard, and behind them, a long, wooded hill closes off the horizon beneath a verdigris sky rendered in broad, diagonal brushstrokes. The site is most likely Saint-Tropez, where Segonzac stayed for the first time in 1908 and which would become the subject of a large part of his work. Born in Boussy-Saint-Antoine in 1884 and trained at the Académie de la Palette, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants as early as 1909, participated in the Section d’Or in 1912, and in the Armory Show in New York in 1913; Introduced to printmaking by Jean-Émile Laboureur shortly after World War I, he became one of the great French printmakers of the century, famous for his drypoint engravings of Colette’s *La Treille muscate*. This print is part of a series of color lithographs based on his Provençal watercolors, printed in an edition of 225 copies on Arches paper, in which the transparency of the original wash is transferred to the stone.
