Erró: The Lovers, 1977 (signed) - Lot 98
Erró: The Lovers, 1977 (signed) Color silkscreen on vellum Signature and notation: Signed in pencil in the lower right; annotated “H.C.” (not for sale) in pencil in the lower right Dimensions: Sheet: 78 × 58 cm (30 11/16 × 22 13/16 in.) Image: 66.5 × 53 cm (26 3/16 × 20 7/8 in.) Condition: Good overall condition, fresh colors. Full margins. Some soiling along the margins, mainly in the upper left. Slight signs of handling. Unframed. Erró reinterprets François Gérard’s *Psyche and Cupid* (1798, Louvre Museum), cutting the neoclassical couple out of its landscape and placing them against a gray-scale background of intertwined limbs and outstretched hands. The solid blue background flattens the sense of depth and reduces the borrowed painting to a collaged fragment. A line of printed text runs along the bottom left of the image, taken from the collaged source. This juxtaposition of the academic ideal and raw sensuality is characteristic of Erró’s work in the Narrative Figuration movement of the 1970s. Original color silkscreen print, hand-signed in pencil by the artist. Uncommercial print, produced outside the numbered edition and reserved for the artist and his collaborators.
