LE Corbusier (Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, known as): Long Isl - Lot 146
LE Corbusier (Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, known as): Long Island, 1962—plate from the portfolio “La mer est toujours présente” Original black lithograph (Atelier Michel Cassé, Paris; published by Éditions Forces-Vives, Geneva) Signed with the monogram, dated, and annotated on the print (LC / CM 62), plate 10 of the series; on Arches vélin paper. Edition of 120 numbered copies (plus a few non-commercial copies); this sheet is unnumbered; the edition number appears on the endpaper. Dimensions: Sheet 56 × 49.5 cm (22 × 19 ½ in.) Image approx. 46.5 × 46.7 cm (18 ¼ × 18 ⅜ in.), H × W Condition: Very good. Beautiful, uniform print with deep, rich blacks and crisp white lines; wide margins with fringed edges (beards) characteristic of Arches paper; fresh cream-colored vellum, with at most slight signs of handling and slight yellowing limited to the very edge of the margins. Unframed. Entirely conceived by Le Corbusier and drawn at Cap Martin, the series “La mer est toujours présente” comprises ten black-and-white lithographs in which biomorphic forms—shells, waves—float against deeply black backgrounds structured by fine geometric lines. On this sheet, the artist has inscribed the title directly into the image itself—“Devinez vous-même”—inviting the viewer to interpret these ambiguous and dreamlike forms for themselves. Printed by Michel Cassé in Paris and published by Forces-Vives in Geneva, the portfolio is part of the architect’s late graphic work, in which his pictorial and sculptural vocabulary finds its freest expression.
