J.-J.-J. Rigal: The Twelfth Clementine, 1971 (signed) Original color aquatint on vellum paper Numbered 162/175 in pencil at the bottom left, titled in pencil at the bottom center, signed and dated “J.J.J. Rigal 71” in pencil at the bottom right Dimensions: Sheet 66 × 51 cm (26 × 20.1 in.); Print area 48 × 36 cm (18.9 × 14.2 in.) Condition: Good. Deep, velvety print with a crisp, clean intaglio. Slight, scattered foxing along the margins; subject unaffected. Unframed. Private collection, France A solitary clementine, its leaf still attached, rests at the edge of a dark tablecloth, against a deep blue-green background that fades to gray toward the bottom. The plate is bordered by a scalloped ochre band that echoes the scalloping of the tablecloth, enlivened by white wavy lines and rows of dots. The subject is characteristic of Rigal’s mature still lifes, in which a single, modest object is isolated within a vast, atmospheric space achieved through the tonal range of the aquatint—a technique in which he was one of the recognized masters of the second half of the 20th century. The son of the engraver Edmond Rigal, he divided his time between Paris and Fontenay-aux-Roses.
