Daniel Spoerri (Switzerland, born in Romania): “I Don’t Want - Lot 218
Daniel Spoerri (Switzerland, born in Romania): “I Don’t Want to Participate,” from the portfolio “Homage to Arthur Köpcke,” 1979 (signed) Four-color offset print with original stamps. Signed 3 times in color and numbered 93/100 by the artist (edition of 100 copies + XXX artist’s proofs). Dimensions: Sheet: 42 × 29.5 cm (16 1/2 × 11 5/8 in.) Condition: Very good condition, unframed. Print taken from the portfolio *Hommage à Arthur Köpcke*, published in 1979 by Den Danske Radeerforening af 1853, Copenhagen, in memory of Fluxus pioneer Arthur “Addi” Köpcke (1928–1977); copies are held at the Harvard Art Museums, the mumok in Vienna, and the Broad in Los Angeles. Spoerri, the inventor of the “trap painting” and a founding figure of Eat Art and New Realism, a close friend of Köpcke since their days in Copenhagen, presents here a paradoxical print that is very much in his style—refusing to participate, while signing it three times.
