Masson and H. Piazza and printed by Imprimerie Champenois, with each issue featuring four original lithographs commissioned specifically for the magazine, accompanied by a captioned strip. An early work: Jouve was nineteen years old when this plate was published, three years before the animal frieze on the Monumental Gate of the 1900 World’s Fair that would establish his reputation. Chimpanzees observed at the Jardin des Plantes under an ironic mythological title—already the future master of animal art.
