Luc-Olivier MERSON (French, 1846–1920) - Lot 171
Luc-Olivier MERSON (French, 1846–1920) Salome, from *L'Estampe Moderne* (fourth bonus plate reserved for subscribers), circa 1899 Color lithograph on vellum paper Signed in the stone within a cartouche in the upper right; dry stamp of the publication (profile of a young woman, Lugt 2790) in the lower right margin Dimensions: Sheet: approx. 40 × 30 cm (16 × 12 in.) Condition: In very good condition, unframed Print from *L’Estampe Moderne*, the famous subscription publication that appeared monthly in Paris from May 1897 to April 1899 under the direction of Ch. Masson and H. Piazza and printed by the Imprimerie Champenois, with each issue featuring four original lithographs commissioned specifically for the magazine. This *Salomé* is one of the rare “bonus plates” offered exclusively to annual subscribers, making it rarer than the standard plates. Merson, winner of the Prix de Rome in 1869 and designer of the Banque de France banknotes, treats the subject in the inspired vein of the Quattrocento characteristic of his symbolist academicism.
