Plate from *L'Estampe Moderne*, the famous subscription publication that appeared monthly in Paris from May 1897 to April 1899 under the direction of Ch. Masson and H. Piazza and printed by Imprimerie Champenois, with each issue featuring four original lithographs commissioned specifically for the magazine, accompanied by a captioned serpent. Rhead, an Englishman living in New York, was one of the great poster artists of the 1890s; this plate in blue, red, and turquoise, featuring peacocks and a dress made of peacock feathers, is his most widely reproduced image and one of the iconic works of the series.
