François Bret (1918–2004) - Lot 40
François Bret (1918–2004) The Jay, 1963 Black felt-tip pen Signed and inscribed by hand: “To Yves Guérin, with warm regards” Dimensions: Sheet: 29.7 × 21 cm (11 ⅝ × 8 ¼ in.) — Image: to be specified Condition: good condition, unframed Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (single-owner provenance; the dedications place the collector in the casino circles of the Riviera and Dinard). Description: A jay rendered in black felt-tip pen with a lively, linear stroke—a spontaneous study that emphasizes line over color, characteristic of Bret. A French painter and central figure in the cultural life of the French Riviera, Bret was a professor at the School of Decorative Arts in Nice (1950) and later director of the School of Fine Arts in Marseille (1961). Drawn and hand-signed in the collector’s guestbook.
