Description: A luminous and atmospheric watercolor of a Mediterranean harbor—fishing boats and a tall-masted sailboat moored in the foreground, and beyond, a pier with a neoclassical building featuring a colonnade (columned pediment) and a Baroque bell tower, set among warm ochre facades—painted in fresh, transparent washes with areas of white left unpainted. Jean Hugon was a French painter born in Marseille who settled in Bordeaux in 1953; influenced by the Impressionists and the Fauves, he painted harbors, boats, and fishing scenes in a colorful style. (The delicate, transparent watercolor technique here differs from his better-known oil paintings; the attribution remains to be confirmed.) Signed and inscribed by hand.
