Provenance: Yves Guérin’s guestbook, compiled between 1963 and 1992 (from a single collection). Dated to the collector’s Casino de Dinard period; Watbot was the subject of a posthumous tribute at the Musée du Château de Dinan, located nearby in Brittany.
Description: A vigorous and gestural view of Rome—domes and bell towers standing out against a blue sky, drawn with black felt-tip pen and brush over warm washes of brown, ocher, and blue, the whole strongly synthesized in a few sweeping strokes. Robert Watbot was a French painter born in Paris in 1942, trained at St. Martin’s School of Art in London, who traveled to Brazil before returning to France; a painter of landscapes, still lifes, and figures, he was the subject of a posthumous tribute at the Musée du Château de Dinan in 1999. Signed, dated, and inscribed by hand.
