Pierre PINONCELLI né en 1929 - Lot 42
Pierre PINONCELLI né en 1929 Faire l'amour à Pékin, 1966 Huile sur toile Au dos signée, datée et titrée 162 x 130 cm Making love in Beijing, 1966 Oil on canvas Signed, dated and titled on the back 162 x 130 cm Pierre Pinoncelli discovered painting at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico, when he was a wannabe adventurer in South America in the 1950's. When he got back to France in 1954, he immediately started painting and organized two sensational exhibitions in Paris («40 Morts» and «30 Métamorphoses», in 1962 and 1963, at the Lacloche gallery Place Vendôme) with a preface written by Michel Lagon. He identified with the «Nouvelle Figuration» movement straightaway (Fautrier, Dubuffet, Appel, etc...) At the beginning of 1963, he spent 3 months in New York, where he paid tribute to Yves Klein «Y.K.B» at the Jewish Museum, and met Marcel Duchamp, at the Segal preview at Sydney Janis'. He then moved to Nice (exhibition at de la Salle's in Vence, with a preface by Pierre Restany) and gave up painting to have a go at street happenings. He led many actions from 1963 until today... from the attack against Malraux at the inauguration of the Chagall Museum, to the mock hold-up of a Société Générale branch in Nice. From his tribute to Diogenes - naked in a barrel - in Lyon to the ritual slaughter of a pig in Coaraze...He went all the way to cut off one of his fingers with an axe in Colombia, to support Ingrid Betancourt; and he broke 2 of Marcel Duchamp's urinals: once at the Carré d'Art in Nîmes in 1993, and, the second time at the «DADA» exhibition at the Georges Pompidou Cultural center in 2006 in Paris. He got sued and arrested many times, fined; he sustained many injuries... And today, this series of 100 urinals as a tribute to Duchamp «Ecce homo». In 1976, in a pathetic attempt to go back to painting, he painted a series of 150 characters - all bearing his own face - like some sort of role-play to celebrate his own glory and -more likely- demise.
