JAPAN - Lot 115
JAPAN "The Japanese Print"; Hazan, 1993; 328 pages. Beige cloth-bound volume with an illustrated dust jacket; filled; first edition; text by Nelly Delay; The Nihonbashi Bridge, Mount Fuji, and the ever-present natural world; the play of light and transparency through the sudare; Kabuki theater; the courtesans of the pleasure quarters; faces and mirrors… all themes that have been a constant source of inspiration for Ukiyo-e artists throughout the centuries. Tracing a historical timeline from the late 17th century to the present day, Nelly Delay explains the enduring nature of these themes in the art of woodblock printing. She describes the historical, cultural, and social context in which this art form emerged and evolved over the centuries, and demonstrates how deeply rooted it is in Japanese civilization. She explains the origins of woodblock printing and the path that daring artists such as Moronobu and Kiyonobu followed in creating the first woodblocks for black-and-white prints. It shows how 18th-century artists and their brocade prints—including Harunobu, who was the first to conceive of utilizing the full potential of color—paved the way for ukiyo-e to subsequently enter a true golden age: Utamaro, eternally inspired by women; Sharaku and the faces of actors; Hokusai, the “madman of drawing”; Hiroshige and nature; Kuniyoshi and his fantastical themes; Toyoharu, Shiba Kokan, and many others… While the book follows a chronological structure—a natural choice for such a subject—the author nonetheless draws comparisons between artists from very different eras in order to reveal the timeless nature of print art, transcending individual works and schools. The originality and abundance of the illustrations, the wealth of information gathered throughout the chapters, and the diversity of the themes covered make this richly illustrated and lively book a valuable guide to traditional Japan. The writing style makes it accessible to a broad audience, while the comprehensive appendices—which detail, among other things, the production stages, censors’ and publishers’ seals, artists’ signatures, formats, techniques, and colors—make it a valuable scholarly resource for specialists, collectors, and knowledgeable enthusiasts.
