A gestural composition in black, composed of hatching and scattered brushstrokes evoking a forest undergrowth—the abstraction drawn from nature that established the reputation of Bazaine, a major figure of the New School of Paris. The plate reproduces a drawing from 1955 and was lithographically printed by Mourlot for San Lazzaro’s XXe Siècle magazine; it bears the artist’s signature and date engraved in the stone, but is neither signed in pencil nor numbered
