PIET ZWART 1885-1977 Abstraction, Lichen, ca.1930. Photograp - Lot 164
PIET ZWART 1885-1977 Abstraction, Lichen, ca.1930. Photograph. Vintage silver print, signed in ink and stamped by the author on the back. 17 x 12.2 cm Piet Zwart (1885-1977), photographer and furniture designer, left his mark on the history of graphic design. Starting out in 1911 as an assistant to architect Jan Wils, a founding member of De Stijl, he was later drawn to Russian Constructivism. The painter Lazar Lissitzky taught him the photogram technique, which was to become a new source of images for his work. Zwart worked for the Bruynzeel company, a supplier of building materials, and taught at the Bauhaus School in Dessau from 1931. In addition to these industrial commissions, he became politically active, joining the Dutch social photography movement. Arrested in 1942, he continued his photographic experiments after the war until the 1950s. In 2000, he was named Designer of the Century by the Dutch Designers' Association.
